ALERT: It’s March which means summer is right around the corner and I can barely breathe.
There are usually three times during the year when every single person feels the need to diet and hit the gym:
1.) Around New Years
2.) After a breakup
3.) Before summer
In case you haven’t been keeping track, summer is slowly approaching. Yes, I know. It’s a surprise to me, too. As I look down and see my beautiful stomach rolls, I gasp and think “How the EFF is it almost summer? HOW THE EFF DID I GET HERE?”
The thought of the sun beaming on my skin gets me so excited because I just mope around during the winter–sad, somber, hungry, and yearning for the sun to come out and play.
My favorite part about summer? Every single person in Chicago comes to life and shines with happiness as if we’ve been buried 20 feet below ground during the winter time.
There are some things I will never understand about summer: Like, why eating and drinking is more enjoyable when it’s sunny and 70 degrees (not complaining). And, why people feel the need to achieve the magazine look in order to allow themselves to even say they are ready to enjoy the 2 months it’s nice enough to dip your toes in the water.
For those who continue to work out every single day, I commend you. I really do. I am proud of you. But, I am here to say that not everyone in this world hits the gym every single day. There are people who enjoy eating bags of chips instead of a kale smoothie, and people who would rather take an afternoon snooze than an afternoon run.
Reality check: most people just don’t have the time.
Come May, us junk food eaters get frantic. We sweat. We tear up. We panic while scrolling through the Victoria Secret website looking at bathing suits as we wonder where the time went.
You see, this is the time where we begin to regret our winter diets of lying in bed stuffing our faces in a pint of ice cream while we dip cookies in milk, eat waffles with extra syrup and butter, and always go for that “just one more” slice of pizza.
Feeling shitty about yourself? Well, I am here to help. Here are 10 ways you can look sexy without a toned beach bod (because you’re awesome no matter what):
Being confident is sexy. I don’t care if you’ve been to the gym or not but if you can carry yourself with good vibes and surround yourself with awesome people, you will be seen as someone who is happy in their own skin.
Wear your favorite outfit
Want to wear a summer outfit that you think you can’t pull off? My only advice is to wear it…and work it! There are a lot of people who think that they can’t wear something because they don’t have the right body for it. Everything fits, you just have to find the right size.
Wear a good pair of sunglasses
This is my favorite one because if you have a great pair of sunglasses, you don’t even need to wear eye makeup. DUH. Spare yourself the 30 minutes it takes to put makeup on. Wearing sunglasses in the summer is important because not only do you always look good in them, but you protect your eyes from sun damage, which leads to wrinkles and poor vision. Also, if you are at the beach, you get to scope out some eye candy without them even knowing. See! Win win.
Find your shade of lipstick
Lipstick is life. I love my lipstick. On weekends, all I need is some concealer and lipstick and I’m good to go. All a girl needs is to find her perfect shade of lipstick to instantly feel like a million bucks.
Invest in a good swimsuit
Bathing suits are so expensive it blows my mind. I’m at the point where I am good with just wearing a bra and underwear and calling it a damn day. Also, I think we all can agree that there is nothing more frustrating than trying on swimsuits. All of a sudden you see hamburgers in your thighs and french fries in your arms. I guess that’s normal? Each body is different when it comes to shape and size especially when it comes to bathing suits. Don’t try and match your best friend. Seriously, don’t. Find a swimsuit you adore and make it your go-to!
Drink tons of water
Summer = dehydration. You don’t want to feel like you’re going to throw up or faint while out with friends. Even if you are drinking beer or hard alcohol, always have a water bottle (filled with WATER) to hydrate yourself.
I’m not telling you to go to the gym–I’m telling you to keep moving. Do your friends want to go out? Do it. Do the girls want to hit the beach or try a new wine tasting class? Go! The whole point of summer is to live. I mean, we hibernated all throughout winter which takes up 5-6 months of our lives. Enjoy the sun and the good weather. Go get that vitamin D, girl.
You know, I would absolutely love to eat a cheese burger with fries every single day but, I am not going to. Sometimes you just gotta grab that salad with grilled chicken to feel good about yourself. Eating healthy never hurts you, so try it out and you’ll see a boost in energy (which means more play time outside).

The only makeup you need this summer is a nice glow. The perfect tan not only makes you feel awesome but it instantly makes you feel more attractive. You can’t ever go wrong with a nice summer tan. Don’t over-do it because let’s be serious, you don’t want to look like a burnt potato chip. Not in to laying out in the sun? Grab a self-tan lotion!
Smile and Laugh
Smiling brings happiness and laughing is contagious. You could be in the worst mood but both of these combined will show people that you own your body AND your life. Don’t be afraid to go out and have a good time. See, I always tell myself that which is probably why I’m broke but whatever! You only live once, right?
The reality is, we can’t lose weight in a healthy way in under 2 weeks. It’s not possible nor would your friends want that for you. I’ve heard crazy stories of these detox diets that make you shit your pants. Let’s try to stay away from that, okay? Take it slow and keep in mind that being healthy is something people should strive for every day. Do as much as you can to make yourself feel confident. You’re beautiful no matter what.
